5 Steps to Make a Classic Bicerin Coffee At Home

So, I'm going to explain my method of making this coffee at home. It's pretty simple. The hardest is getting the layers right.
Total Time 10 minutes

Equipment

  • Espresso Machine or Moka Pot: For brewing a strong and aromatic espresso.
  • Small Saucepan: To prepare the hot chocolate base.
  • Hand whisk or electric mixer: For whipping the cream to the perfect consistency.
  • A clear glass or cup: To show off those beautiful layers.

Ingredients

  • Espresso: 1-2 shots for a bold and rich coffee base.
  • Hot chocolate: 1/2 cup, made with high-quality cocoa powder and milk for a creamy foundation.
  • Heavy cream: Lightly whipped to form the luscious top layer.
  • Optional garnishes: Cocoa powder, grated chocolate, or a cinnamon stick for that finishing touch.

Instructions

  • Prepare the hot chocolate: In a small saucepan, heat milk over medium heat. Mix in cocoa powder and sugar, stirring until the mixture is smooth, creamy, and lump-free.
  • Brew the espresso: While the hot chocolate simmers, prepare 1-2 shots of espresso using your espresso machine or moka pot. Set it aside once brewed.
  • Lightly whip the cream: Using a hand whisk or electric mixer, whip the heavy cream until it thickens slightly but remains pourable. It should be silky, not stiff.
  • Layer the drink: Start by pouring the hot chocolate into the base of your clear glass. Next, gently add the espresso on top to create a distinct second layer. Finally, carefully spoon or pour the whipped cream over the espresso to complete the third layer.
  • Serve and enjoy: Serve immediately, showcasing the distinct layers. Garnish with a sprinkle of cocoa powder, grated chocolate, or even a cinnamon stick for an extra hint of flavor.

Personal Tip:

When layering, use the back of a spoon to pour the espresso and cream slowly. This helps keep the layers neat and prevents them from blending together too quickly.
